(Shepherd University to host Piano Olympics May 7)
Shepherdstown, WV--Shepherd University will host West Virginia's first ever Piano Olympics on Saturday, May 7 in the main theater of the Frank Center. Piano Olympics showcases each student's progress in musical skills.
The students are evaluated according to the standards set forth in the Piano Olympics guidelines. Students gain a sense of companionship and teamwork by performing for each other and teachers have the opportunity to express their ideas in a friendly atmosphere.
Concert pianist Alexander Peskanov will adjudicate the event. He has appeared internationally with the London Symphony Orchestra, the English Chamber Orchestra, and the Hong Kong Philharmonic. Peskanov graduated from the Stoliarsky School of Music in Odessa, Ukraine, and received his master's and bachelor's at the Juilliard School in New York. He has collaborated with Maurice Andre, Jean-Pierre Rampal, and Yo-Yo Ma, and appears frequently with his brother Mark Peskanov.
The Piano Olympics concludes with an awards ceremony where Peskanov joins participating teachers and students and performs a marathon of scales.
Class times are as follows: Masterclass I and technique exam, 9:30-11 a.m.; Masterclass II and technique exam: 11:15 a.m.-12:30 p.m.; Lunch, 12:30-1:30 p.m.; Masterclass III and technique exam, 1:45-4 p.m.; concert and technique demonstration by Peskanov, 4 p.m.; Awards ceremony, 4:30 p.m., to be followed by a reception.
