Shepherdstown, WV--The Shepherd University Foundation has
created the Gerald F. Smith Memorial Scholarship to provide financial
support to students from Winchester or Frederick County, Virginia, majoring
in business, science, or engineering.
The endowed scholarship was established by Michael Smith of Winchester,
Virginia, in memory of his father who owned and operated Valley Proteins,
Inc., a Winchester-based company that recycles animal by-products and
restaurant grease. The business has grown steadily since Gerald Smith's
father started the company in 1949. Gerald began working there around 1951
during his high school years at James Wood High School in Winchester. The
company now employs 1,350 people and does business on the East Coast and in
the Southwest.
Michael Smith, current vice president of Valley Proteins and a 1989
graduate of Shepherd, said that his father was a lifelong supporter of
higher education and a strong believer in employing good people who needed a
chance to succeed.
