Shepherdstown, WV--The Shepherd University Foundation has created the Gerald F. Smith Memorial Scholarship to provide financial support to students from Winchester or Frederick County, Virginia, majoring in business, science, or engineering.

The endowed scholarship was established by Michael Smith of Winchester, Virginia, in memory of his father who owned and operated Valley Proteins, Inc., a Winchester-based company that recycles animal by-products and restaurant grease. The business has grown steadily since Gerald Smith's father started the company in 1949. Gerald began working there around 1951 during his high school years at James Wood High School in Winchester. The company now employs 1,350 people and does business on the East Coast and in the Southwest.

Michael Smith, current vice president of Valley Proteins and a 1989 graduate of Shepherd, said that his father was a lifelong supporter of higher education and a strong believer in employing good people who needed a chance to succeed.

For more information about this scholarship, or about creating a scholarship, contact the Foundation at 304/876-5391 or P.O. Box 3210, Shepherdstown, West Virginia, 25443.
