conference)
Shepherdstown, WV--Fourteen Shepherd University students
participated in the 25th Mid-Atlantic Undergraduate Social Research
Conference on April 19 at Elizabethtown College, Pennsylvania. Approximately
200 students represented 16 schools giving presentations or posters.
Jefferson County residents submitting papers include Adam Hunt,
Shepherdstown, "The Effects of Sundowning on Nursing Home Patients in a
Veteran's Hospital"; Lauren McKee, Shepherdstown, "Stress and Coping Skills
of Undergraduates"; Christopher Patterson, Charles Town, "Gender and
Attitudes Toward Rap Music"; Chris Brown, Kearneysville, "Terrorism and the
Theories of Marx and Durkheim"; and Jake Nelson, Shenandoah Junction,
"Gender and Attitudes of College Students about the Presentation of Women in
Advertisements."
Berkeley County residents submitting papers include Ezekial Holt,
Martinsburg, "Art and Sport in Late Meiji and Taisho Japan"; Christy Lebida,
Martinsburg, "Characteristics of Personnel Who Have Completed Treatment";
Karlee Williams, Hedgesville, "Domestic Violence: Victim or Abuser? Creating
an Assessment Tool"; and Belita Bailey, Falling Waters, "Recidivism to Acute
Care Psychiatric Treatment by the Mentally Ill as Influenced by Medication
Compliance."
Other students submitting papers include Julie Dawson, Vienna, "Simmel
and Durkheim Take on the Sims"; Justin Evans, Moorefield, "Negative Labels,
Falling Grades"; Kim Scritchfield, Myersville, Maryland, "Late Hospice
Referrals Affect the Duration of the Time Patients Spend in Hospice Care";
Amanda Hartman, Finksburg, Maryland, "Parental Involvement and the Impact on
Their Children's Education"; and Pamela Cooper, Stephens City, Virginia,
"The Effects of Gender on Attitude Toward Premarital Cohabitation."
At this year's conference Dr. V.J. Brown, dean of the School of Social
Sciences and Business, was awarded for his pioneering work and dedication to
the creation and perpetuation of the conference. Villanova University,
Towson University, Shippensburg University and Hood College were among the
16 schools participating. The first Mid-Atlantic Undergraduate Social
Research Conference was convened on the Elizabethtown College Campus on
April 6, 1981.
