Shepherdstown, WV--Twenty-three Shepherd University students will spend their spring break in John's Island, South Carolina, building houses with Habitat for Humanity's Collegiate Challenge program.

Students will work with Sea Island Habitat for Humanity March 12-March 19. The students have raised more than $7,500 to cover the trip's expenses and will be donating $3,700 to Sea Island Habitat for Humanity to build the house they are constructing and future houses in the area.

"I decided to go on this trip because I really believe in the mission of Habitat," said junior Lydia Johnson, Habitat for Humanity campus chapter president. "I believe in the value of giving yourself in the service of others and that's what I hope to do with my break."

Chartered in January, the Shepherd University campus chapter of Habitat allows students the opportunity to bring back skills, experience, and enthusiasm to share with the rest of their affiliates. Students are helping themselves and the community as they help others build new houses, new hope, and new lives.

Collegiate Challenge is a year-round school break program, coordinated through the Collegiate Challenge team at Habitat for Humanity International in Americus, Georgia. More than 12,000 students from 700 colleges, universities, and high schools will volunteer at over 250 sites nationwide for Collegiate Challenge. Collectively these students have pledged more than $1 million for different Habitat for Humanity affiliates.
