(Shepherd to offer introduction to gaming course)
Shepherdstown, WV--Shepherd University will
offer an introductory course in gaming during the spring semester beginning
January 11, 2005. The course will look at the history of gaming and its
current role today as a multibillion dollar industry.
West Virginia has become dependent on lottery and slot machine
operations to support budgetary programs in health care, education, and
senior citizen programming. Maryland, Virginia, and Pennsylvania
legislators are also considering gaming operations in their states. This
course will examine horse racing, lotteries, and slot machine operations as
well as casino and other gaming operations. The hospitality industry will
be discussed for the role that food, beverage, and lodging services play in
the operation of gaming centers. Social and human resources concerns as
well as the need for counseling services for problem gambling will also be
presented. Several field trips to Charles Town Races and Slots to see
gaming operations in action are planned along with guest speakers from the
gaming industry, regulatory, and counseling areas.
The Introduction to Gaming class will be offered on Tuesday evenings
from 6-8:40 p.m. as part of the recreation and leisure studies curriculum.
The instructor will be Karl Wolf, Shepherd's athletic director. For those
who wish to register for RECR 299 but are not current students, please
contact the Office of Admissions for enrollment information at 304/876-5212
or 800/344-5231, ext. 5212. Directions to register as a special non-degree
student are posted on the Shepherd Web site www.shepherd.edu/admweb.
