Shepherdstown, WV--The Performing Arts Series at Shepherd will end its spring season with the Ballet Folklorico Quetzalli de Veracruz on Wednesday, April 27 at 8 p.m. in the Frank Center Theater.
With their brilliant costumes, joyous music, and clear passion for the riches of their culture, Ballet Folklorico recreates the feeling of the Veracruz carnival. Of all the touring companies in Mexico, Quetzalli is the only one that has live music throughout their show. "We've had people come to us to tell us we recreate the fiestas exactly the same way they are in Mexico. It is just like being there," said Hugo Betancourt, founder and director.
Quetzalli is one of Mexico's leading folk music and dance troupes and hails from the state of Veracruz, a region in Mexico with a strong Afro-Caribbean influence and a rich musical tradition. Now celebrating its 20th anniversary, the group will present dances from several different regions of Mexico including the traditional "Danzes de los Concheros," which pay homage to Aztec tradition and features elaborate feather headdresses and shell anklets.
This tour of Ballet Folklorico Quetzalli de Veracruz is made possible by a grant from the Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts Regional Touring Program and through a grant from the West Virginia Division of Culture and History, with approval from the West Virginia Commission on the Arts, in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts.
Tickets are $15 general public; $10 for senior citizens, Shepherd faculty/staff, and Jefferson County public school employees; $5 for kids under 18; and free to Shepherd students with valid Rambler I.D. while supplies last. Tickets may be purchased at the Shepherd University Student Center Information Center. For more information or to purchase tickets, call 304/876-5497.
