Shepherdstown, WV--The Performing Arts Series at Shepherd will present Taylor 2, the touring division of the famous Paul Taylor Dance Company on Friday, April 8 at 8 p.m. in the Frank Center Theater.

Taylor's choreography is infused with everyday activities, gestures, and postures and is known for its beautifully fluid "underwater" quality. He studied dance at Juilliard, and by 1945 had a small company of dancers and presented his own choreography. He joined the Martha Graham Dance Company in 1955 for the first of seven seasons as a soloist while continuing to choreograph his own troupe. After retiring as a performer in 1975, Taylor devoted himself to choreography and created such works as Esplanade; Airs; Arden Court; Lost, Found, and Lost; Company B; and Piazolla Caldera.

In celebration of the Paul Taylor Dance Company's 50th anniversary, the Company and Taylor 2 are currently completing a 50 state tour between March 2004 and the spring of 2006. Taylor 2 was established in 1993 to ensure that his works could be seen by audiences all over the world, unhindered by economic or logistical limitations. Taylor worked with longtime colleague Linda Hodes to create a company that could accommodate performance requests as well as teach and provide community outreach. He looked back to the 1954 origins of the Paul Taylor Dance Company for the structure of his new company, six professionals with a particular gift for his style to perform his work throughout the world.

Tickets are $15 for general admission; $10 for senior citizens, Shepherd faculty/staff, or Jefferson County public school employees; $5 for kids under 18; and free to Shepherd students with a valid Rambler ID while supplies last. Tickets may be purchased at the Shepherd University Student Center Information Desk or by calling 304/876-5497.
