Shepherdstown, WV--Shepherd University alumna Carolyn Malachi will return to Shepherd to perform in a free concert Friday, February 1, at 7:30 p.m. in the Storer Ballroom of the Shepherd student center.

Malachi's unique approach to music combines jazz, hip-hop, and spoken word. Dubbed "sweet songstress" by BET, the independent, Grammy-nominated artist and great-granddaughter of pianist John Malachi counts Yasiin Bey (formerly Mos Def), Radiohead, and Sarah Vaughan among her great influences.

"We're really excited to have Carolyn back," said Christana Johnson, assistant vice president for student affairs for student success. "She was very involved with the Multicultural Student Affairs office, including being a member of the Multicultural Leadership Team, a group of students that promotes diversity and advocates for social justice both on and off campus."

The concert kicks off Multicultural Student Affair's Black History Month celebration.

"While Carolyn was a student here she helped to plan and implement MSA's cultural celebrations. It feels like we've come full circle to feature her in our Black History Month celebration," Johnson said.

Malachi is a 2006 graduate of Shepherd.
