Shepherd partners with Berkeley County Schools to ensure student success

Shepherdstown, WV--Shepherd University has entered a partnership with Berkeley County Schools to help students in grades 6-12 make a successful transition into post-secondary education. Unpacking the College Experience, set to begin this fall, is a collaborative effort designed to provide educational guidance, resources, and support for students, parents, and faculty and staff at all levels.
Kimberly Scranage, vice president for enrollment management at Shepherd, said that the concept for the program came out of a meeting with the Shepherd University Board of Governors to address the various issues facing secondary students going to college.
The program is designed to create a more seamless and supporting learning system to prepare students and families for post-graduate success. Each year during the program, the student will unpack a different aspect of college preparation, from high school course planning, financial aid, and required college applications and entrance exams.
"Student success is our priority and this will help students before they arrive on campus," said Shepherd University President Suzanne Shipley. "We want to make sure their transition to college is as seamless as possible and ensure they are prepared when they arrive."
Pre- and post-assessment of student learning will be provided in order to produce evidence that students are learning the outcomes intended by the program.
"Berkeley County Schools' welcomes the opportunity to partner with Shepherd University on the Unpacking the College Experience initiative," said Veronique N. Walker, director of diversity and student support services in Berkeley County and a member of the Shepherd University Board of Governors. "Our school counselors work diligently to provide our students with the academic, career, and personal and social skills necessary to function in the 21st century society. Implementing this initiative will further enhance our efforts and ensure quality learning for all students."
