Shepherd Department of Music's Salon Series opens September 6

Shepherdstown, WV--The Shepherd University Music Department 2012-13 Salon Series opens this year's recital series on Thursday, September 6 at 8 p.m. with pianist Dr. Yu-Hsuan Liao, coordinator of keyboard studies and assistant professor of music at Shepherd, in the Walker Horton Shipley Recital Hall of the Frank Center. The series of monthly performances is free and open to the public.

Liao, a native of Taipei, Taiwan, began her musical studies in Tung-Hai University, Taichung, where she received her bachelor of fine arts degree. She received her master's and doctoral degrees in musical arts in piano performance from University of Texas at Austin. She is a piano soloist, collaborative artist, and music educator, with a repertoire in instrumental, chamber, vocal, and choral music in many styles. Liao has worked with the American Repertory Ensemble and performed piano solo, chamber, and accompanying vocal music in the company's performance series. Her solo performance of "Valses Poeticos" Passion at Play with A.R.E. was nominated for best instrumentalist in the Austin Critics Table Award. In 2010, she gave a piano lecture-recital based on her book published in 2009.

Other recitals in the Salon Series will include Liao and Dr. Rob Tudor, director of vocal studies and chair of the Department of Music at Shepherd, on Thursday, October 11; Stephen Czarkowski, Shepherd adjunct professor, on cello, and Dr. Scott Beard, professor of music, on piano on Thursday, November 15; the Shepherd Jazz Faculty Concert featuring Dr. Kurtis Adams, assistant professor of music, on saxophone, Dr. Mark Cook, associate professor of music and director of jazz studies, on piano, and Shepherd adjunct professors David Marsh on bass, Ronnie Shaw on drums, and Mike Kamuf on trumpet, on Thursday, January 17, 2013; the Shepherd Three featuring Dr. Laura Renninger, Shepherd professor of music history, on harpsichord, and adjunct professors Anne Munro on flute, Gregory Shook on oboe, and Richard Polonchak on bassoon, on Thursday, February 7, 2013; and the final recital will feature Beard on the piano on Thursday, March 7, 2013.
