(Shepherd announces winners of Common Reading student essay contest and requests community essays)

Shepherdstown, WV--Shepherd University is proud to announce the winners of the Common Reading/One Book, One Community 2011-12 student essay contest, in which 79 students entered.

First place went to Rebecca McCoy for Black Friday. McCoy received a $250 gift certificate to the Shepherd University Bookstore. Second place went to Summer Williams for I Believe in Today. Williams received a $50 gift certificate to a local restaurant. Third place went to Ethan Johnson for We Need More Truck Drivers, and Ben Johnson for The Power of Cheese Curls. They received a recently published book. These essays will be included in the Shepherd University This I Believe, 2011-12.

The Common Reading Program is asking area residents to write essays based on the book, This I Believe, edited by Dan Gediman and Jay Allison.

There will be a community essay reading and reception on Wednesday, April 4 at 7 p.m. in the Robert C. Byrd Legislative Center. The reading and reception are free and open to the public. Essays will be recorded and played on the campus radio station, WSHC-89.7 FM. For more information on the essay, contact Judi McIntyre at 304-876-5396.
