Shepherdstown, WV--Shepherd University Intramurals will host Olympic medalist Dominique Dawes as the speaker for the National Recreation Sports and Fitness Day on Wednesday, February 22 at 7 p.m. in the Storer Ballroom.

Dawes, an elite Olympic gymnast, competed and medaled in three consecutive Olympic Games. She is the only African-American gymnast to win an Olympic gold medal and, in 1996, became the first female African-American gymnast to win an individual medal, capturing bronze with her floor exercise performance and helping solidify her place in the United States Olympic Committee Hall of Fame.

A graduate of the University of Maryland, Dawes works closely with the President's Council on Fitness, Sports, and Nutrition to help promote the Let's Move Initiative, educating children on fitness and nutrition.

National Recreation Sports Fitness Day is a national event recognized by the National Intramural-Recreation Sports Association, marked each February 22, NIRSA's founding date. In 1999, members voted to proclaim this a day for nationwide focus on the positive benefits of recreational sports, fitness, and wellness.

This is a free event open to students, faculty, staff, and the community. National Recreational Sports Fitness Day is sponsored by All Star Limousines, Clarion Hotel and Conference Center, Shepherd University Intramurals, Multicultural Student Affairs, Program Board, Residence Life Office, and Student Affairs.

In the case of inclement weather conditions which close the university, the lecture will take place on Thursday, February 23 at 11 a.m.
