Shepherd offers autism workshop Nov. 17

Shepherdstown, WV--Shepherd University is hosting an autism workshop "Creating Inclusion in the Classroom" featuring Amy Bryan-Chapman, autism coordinator and behavior specialist for Berkeley County Schools, Saturday, November 17, at the Erma Ora Byrd Hall on campus.
The workshop will have two sessions. The first is an overview of autism spectrum disorders, and the second will cover strategies for easing transition, change, and scheduling for students with autism.
"At Shepherd, we are committed to providing teachers, parents, and administrators in our region with the information and tools necessary to address best practices for inclusion in the classroom, allowing learning to take place for all students," said Dr. Scott Beard, dean of graduate studies and continuing education at Shepherd.
"We are very pleased to have Amy Bryan-Chapman with us, a local expert on the topic, who has presented information to teachers throughout the region on identification of autism spectrum disorders and transition plans for the classroom."
Bryan-Chapman's work includes conducting functional behavior assessments, analyzing data, and developing behavior intervention plans for individuals. She is a Ph.D. candidate in educational leadership at West Virginia University.
Areas to be discussed during the workshop include identifying behaviors, developing strategies and lesson plans for scheduling and transitions, discovering theimpact of autism on developmental skills, and learning how autism affects the ability to learn.
Teachers, administrators, school psychologists and counselors, other professionals, parents, students, and community members are invited to attend.
The workshop is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and costs $175 for three EDPD credits, $310 for six EDPD credits, and $40 for non-teachers. Fees include credits, meals, and workshop materials.
