Shepherd University Foundation accepts gift to aid undergraduates majoring in biological sciences
ISSUED: 30 January 2012
Shepherdstown, WV--Shepherdstown, WV--The Shepherd University Foundation is pleased to accept a significant gift from Dr. Joseph J. Renn III and his wife Robin S. Renn to the Elsie Brown Renn and Joseph J. Renn, Jr. Memorial Scholarship. Established in 1999 by Dr. Renn as a tribute to his late parents, the scholarship aids undergraduate students majoring in the biological sciences.
Renn retired from full-time patient care in 2003 and full-time occupational medicine in 2007. He currently serves as an adjunct professor at the West Virginia University (WVU) Medical School, where he sits on the medical admissions board. Renn has served as a mentor to two WVU medical students who received his scholarship while attending Shepherd University.
Renn feels Shepherd provided a solid foundation for fulfilling his dream of attending medical school and becoming a doctor. He and his two sisters, Roberta Renn Absher and Emma Renn Borden, are second-generation graduates of Shepherd University. In 1959, the siblings were photographed with President Oliver Ikenberry for the student newspaper as they each attended Shepherd at the same time. In the spring of 2011, the siblings reunited to reenact the photograph with President Suzanne Shipley.
Dr. and Mrs. Renn once again visited Shepherd in January to present President Shipley with a check for their gift. While on campus, Renn also met with faculty and administrators to discuss how to best counsel students who are preparing to enter medical school.
