Shepherd University holds youth orchestra auditions August 31 ISSUED: 23 August 2011 Shepherdstown, WV--The Shepherd University Preparatory Orchestra will hold auditions for its 13th season for the junior and senior members on Wednesday, August 31 at 6 p.m. in the Frank Center. Positions are open for all string sections in both orchestras. The Shepherd Preparatory Orchestra welcomes Jeffry Newberger, interim director, for the orchestra's 13th season. Newberger is currently assistant conductor of both the Trinity Chamber Orchestra and Apollo Chamber Orchestra, as well as executive music director for Opera Alterna, for which he has directed productions of Thomas Pasatieri's Padrevia and Douglas Moore's Gallantry. He has led productions of The Last Five Years, Ragtime, and Andrew Lloyd Webber's By Jeeves. As a violinist, Newberger is a member of the Apollo Chamber Orchestra and Two Rivers Chamber Orchestra, and has performed with the Alexandria Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra of Charlottesville, Concert Artists of Baltimore, Opera Camerata of Washington, and, as acting concertmaster with the York Symphony Orchestra. He performs regularly with the Third Millennium Ensemble as violinist and conductor. Newberger is an adjunct with the violin faculty at the McLean School of Maryland and is a member of the preparatory division faculty at Shepherd. Students auditioning for the Junior Youth Orchestra are asked to prepare a solo and scale of their choice to perform at the audition and should be able to sight-read music at a beginner to early intermediate level. Students auditioning for the Senior Youth Orchestra are asked to prepare a solo of their choice and will be asked to play scales and sight-read. Students wishing to audition on violin or viola will be heard from 6 to 8 p.m. Students wishing to audition on cello or bass will be heard from 8 to 9 p.m. All students will be auditioned on a first-come-first-served basis during the scheduled audition time for their instrument. The Shepherd Preparatory Orchestra meets Wednesday evenings for rehearsals. Each group presents two concerts during the school year. The orchestra is made up of student members from Berkeley and Jefferson County, and Washington counties, Maryland, as well as students from Shepherd. The tuition fee for the Shepherd Youth Orchestra is $125 per semester and will include two complimentary family member admissions to each concert.
