Mountaintop removal program presented November 4 by Shepherd's Appalachian Studies program ISSUED: 25 October 2011 Shepherdstown, WV--Shepherd University's Appalachian Studies program will present Mountaintop Removal and the Community on Friday, November 4 at 2 p.m. in the Robert C. Byrd Center for Legislative Studies. The program, which will feature speakers from the Keepers of the Mountain Foundation, Shepherd's Institute of Environmental and Physical Sciences, and the Appalachian Studies Board, will examine mountaintop removal and environmental issues facing the state of West Virginia. This program is one of many sponsored by the Shepherd University Appalachian Studies program, which includes the Appalachian Heritage Writer-in-Residence and Writers Project, the West Virginia Fiction Competition, and the Anthology of Appalachian Writers Project. The Appalachian Studies minor is an interdisciplinary program that is offered to Shepherd students and interested community members. In spring 2012, the courses Appalachian Culture and West Virginia and the Appalachian Region will be offered.
