George Tyler Moore Center for the Study of the Civil War receives painting ISSUED: 7 October 2011 Shepherdstown, WV--Drs. James and Mary Holland, of Shepherdstown, recently donated the painting "General Robert E. Lee Returning to his Men on Traveller after the Surrender at Appomattox," to the George Tyler Moore Center for the Study of the Civil War at Shepherd University. Dr. James Holland is a professor emeritus of history at Shepherd, who taught in Shepherd's department of history from 1971 to 2004. "We are most pleased to receive this fine painting from our good friends, Drs. Jim and Mary Holland, who have been very supportive of the mission of the George Tyler Moore Center for the Study of the Civil War," said Dr. Mark Snell, director of the center. The painting is on display in the front parlor of the center, located on the corner of German and Church Streets in Shepherdstown. "This highly evocative painting, inspired by contemporary eyewitness accounts, depicts General Robert E. Lee on Traveller meeting his men immediately following his surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia," Dr. Jim Holland said. "It is a fine and important painting." Holland said he donated the painting because he wanted to keep it close to home and support the local university. -30-KESNER |
