Shepherd Common Reading sponsors community essay contest ISSUED: 7 September 2011 Shepherdstown, WV--The Shepherd University One Book, One Community Program has chosen This I Believe, edited by Jay Allison and Dan Gediman, as its common reading for the 2011-2012 academic year. This I Believe is based on the very popular NPR "This I Believe" radio program. The program invites members of the Shepherd community, as well as the Shepherdstown community, to write their own "This I Believe" essay. Directions for writing the essay are in the appendix of the book, This I Believe (which can be found in the local bookstores, and the Shepherdstown and Shepherd libraries). Essays sent electronically to jmcintyr@shepherd.edu will be placed in Shepherd University, This I Believe, 2011-2012. Essay readings will be held November 21 and December 8 in the Robert C. Byrd Center for Legislative Studies Auditorium at 7 p.m. Jay Allison will meeting with anyone writing an essay from 2-3 p.m. on November 15 in the Robert C. Byrd Center for Legislative Studies. The Scarborough Society will sponsor a lecture by Allison on November 15 at 7 p.m. in the Frank Center. A student essay reading will be held Thursday, November 17, from 2-3 p.m. in the Robert C. Byrd Center for Legislative Studies auditorium. Dr. Suzanne Shipley will begin the program by reading her own essay. Two community essay reading will be held Monday, November 21 and Thursday, December 8 in the Robert C. Byrd Center for Legislative Studies at 7 p.m. A faculty and staff essay reading will be held on Monday, November 21 at 3 p.m. in the Cumberland Room of the Student Center.
