Shepherdstown, WV--Shepherd University President Suzanne Shipley, along with the Shepherd University Foundation, hosted the biennial reception for donors and scholars Sunday, October 2 in the Erma Ora Byrd Hall atrium. Student scholarship winners, their family and friends, prominent faculty and staff, representatives from university leadership boards, and Shepherd alumni and friends who have established awards comprised the 250 guests at the event. For the first time ever, faculty excellence award winners were also honored.

After opening remarks by President Shipley, Foundation President Ray Alvarez welcomed the attendees and thanked the donors for their dedication of time and treasure. Monica Lingenfelter, Foundation executive vice president, spoke of the honor and pride scholarship and faculty excellence recipients should feel.

"We want you to feel proud about being singled out," said Lingenfelter. "However, feeling pride doesn't mean you shouldn't also feel grateful to the donors who chose to make gifts to Shepherd University to support your academic award."

Lingenfelter then encouraged the recipients, as they graduate and establish themselves in their careers and lives, to remember the generosity bestowed on them.

"Decide today to pay it forward. Decide to invest in a Shepherd student's education, as someone else invested in you. Honor the donors who invested in you and honor yourselves by reaching out to others."

More than 500 endowed and annually funded scholarship awards are provided through the Foundation.
