Shepherdstown, WV--The Shepherd University Foundation is pleased to announce the dedication of two teak benches in honor of its first president William "Pappy" Thacher and its current leader Ramon A. Alvarez. Bearing bronze plaques in recognition of the roles these men have played, the benches flank the front walk of McMurran Hall. They were presented at the Foundation's annual meeting on September 15.

Dr. Carol Ann Van Evera, daughter of the late Professor Thacher, accepted the bench on behalf of her father. Dr. Van Evera's mother Ruth Thacher also served as a longtime Foundation board member and honorary director. Also present for the presentation were Alvarez and his wife Mary.

As the Foundation celebrates 50 years of service to Shepherd University, its Board of Directors felt it was appropriate to recognize these men, both of whom have led the organization during critical periods. While Thacher's leadership was instrumental in the Foundation's establishment in 1961, Alvarez successfully led it through the University's first comprehensive campaign as both president of the board and vice chair of the Create the Future Campaign. Under his leadership, the Foundation continues to succeed in providing financial support for Shepherd students and faculty.

"As we celebrate our 50th year, I believe it is fitting to honor both Professor Thacher and Ray Alvarez by placing two additional benches along McMurran's front walk," said former Foundation president and current vice president James M. Davis, who led the presentation. Davis and the late James M. Moler were previously recognized with benches bearing their names. The Shepherd University Foundation has been led by a total of four presidents during its 50-year history.
