Shepherd Music Salon Series presents A Love Supreme ISSUED: 29 September 2011 Shepherdstown, WV--The Shepherd University Department of Music will present the faculty jazz quartet in a performance of John Coltrane's legendary suite A Love Supreme as part of the Shepherd Music Salon Series in the Walker Horton Shipley Recital Hall of the Frank Center on Friday, October 7 at 8 p.m. Recorded in 1964, A Love Supreme is considered one of John Coltrane's greatest works. The suite represents the meeting point of his Hard Bop experiences with his newfound interests in aspects of Free Jazz. Spiritually, A Love Supreme encapsulates Coltrane's personal lifelong spiritual journey. The Shepherd Faculty Jazz Quartet includes Dr. Kurtis Adams on saxophone, Dr. Nathan Lincoln-Decusatis on piano, David Marsh on bass, and Ronnie Shaw on drums. Originally from Tennessee, Dr. Kurtis Adams moved to Boulder, Colorado, after receiving his bachelor of music education degree from Tennessee Tech University, to pursue his master of music in performance and his doctor of musical arts in jazz studies from the University of Colorado. Adams performed with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra, Colorado Music Festival Orchestra, Ultraphonic Jazz Orchestra, Metropolitan Jazz Orchestra, and the 9th and Lincoln Orchestra. He has shared the stage with great musicians including Arturo Sandoval, Paquito D'Rivera, Greg Gisbert, Pat Bianchi, Jeff Jenkins, Brad Goode, Peter Sommer, and Paul Romaine. Dr. Nathan Lincoln-DeCusatis is an award-winning Washington, D.C., composer who has performed with the Chesapeake Orchestra, Left Bank Quartet, Noah Getz, Molly Barth, Inscape ensemble, and the piano and saxophone duo Six Impossible Things. Lincoln-DeCusatis received the 2006 Walsum Prize in composition for his string quartet Quinta Corda and an American Music Center CAP award in 2009. Lincoln-DeCusatis attended Ithaca College, graduating magna cum laude with a bachelor of music in composition, and a doctor of musical arts in composition from University of Maryland. He also studied at the Ecole Normale de Musique-Alfred Cortot in Paris, France. At Shepherd, Lincoln-DeCusatis teaches composition and jazz piano. David Marsh, Shepherd's jazz bass instructor, was a child prodigy who studied at the Duke Ellington School of the Performing Arts. Marsh is a sought-after bassist and formerly taught jazz studies and jazz bass at George Washington University. He has performed with artists such as Ricky Loza, Tim Eyermann's East Coast Offering, Vaighn Nark, and Chris Vadala. Ronnie Shaw, Shepherd jazz drum instructor, performed with the prestigious USAF Academy Band and the USAF Band, Washington D.C., and conducted clinics as percussion specialist for the Air Force. In 2002, Shaw joined The Three Mo' Tenors, now known as Cook, Dixon, and Young. He has performed with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra, the Washington Opera with Placido Domingo, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and Chicago Symphony orchestras.
