Shepherd University alumni endow family scholarship
ISSUED: 14 October 2010
Shepherdstown, WV--The Shepherd University Foundation has announced the creation of the Tiano Family Endowment funded by Lou and Marina Tiano and their son and daughter-in-law, Marc and Kristin Tiano. A general education scholarship, the Tiano Family Endowment will be used to provide financial assistance to deserving Shepherd students.
Shepherd has been an integral part of the Tiano family for more than 40 years. Lou and Marina Tiano, both alumni, have remained active within the Shepherd and Shepherdstown community. The Tianos are members of the Scarborough Society, a friends of the library organization sponsored by the Shepherd University Foundation, and Marina serves on the committee for the Scarborough Society Gala, the organization's annual fundraising event. Lou Tiano serves on the Alumni Assoiation board of directors and is treasurer. The Tianos are also involved with Friends of Music, and, along with their family, enjoy cheering on the Rams at sporting events.
As education majors at Shepherd, both Lou and Marina Tiano went on to pursue careers in their field of study. Before retiring in 2005 as supervisor in charge of health and physical education, driver education, and athletics for Loudoun County public schools, Lou Tiano was a physical education teacher and principal at several Loudoun County elementary schools. Marina Tiano retired after 37 years as an elementary school and volunteers with the Shepherdstown Public Library.
The Tianos feel that now is the time to give back to their alma mater. "We share President Suzanne Shipley's vision for Shepherd's campus and support the programs she has initiated," said Lou Tiano.
"We chose to endow a named fund so that deserving students across all curriculums would have the opportunity to benefit from its financial assistance both now and in the future," said Marina Tiano.
Because Shepherd has always been at the heart of the Tiano family, their eldest son, Marc, and his wife, Kristin, also helped establish the fund. The Tianos' three other sons will have the opportunity to contribute in the future.
