Shepherdstown, WV--Shepherd University student Sarah Hollis of Martinsburg was awarded the Peggy Collins Porterfield Nursing Scholarship for the 2009-10 academic year. The Peggy Collins Porterfield Nursing Scholarship was established by her family and led by her daughter, Jennifer Porterfield, in honor of Peggy's successful nursing career at City Hospital in Martinsburg. The scholarship is for a Jefferson or Berkeley county student seeking a nursing degree at Shepherd.

Hollis is the first recipient of this newly recognized scholarship and the first in her family to attend to college.

"It was a nice surprise. Without this scholarship, I would be further in debt. It has helped with all the extra expenses like books, uniform, and nurse packs."

Hollis is currently a senior in the nursing program at Shepherd. After graduation, Hollis plans to further her education and enroll in a master's program for a nurse practitioner. She hopes to land a job working with patients in a hospital. Hollis explains that "working in a hospital gives you diversity."

Hollis has been working the past five years as a pharmacist technician at Martins Food Stores in Martinsburg. "My job has really come in handy by helping me out in my pharmaceutical classes."

This spring Hollis is enjoying her Complex Care-Critical Cardiac Care class. "I really like learning about the heart and I find it very interesting," Hollis says.

Jennifer Porterfield said, "It takes a special person to be a nurse." Hollis agrees: "It's a lot to handle when dealing with doctors and patients. It's also hard to walk away from certain cases like losing a child or child abuse."
