Shepherd's Common Reading Program presents "Fresh" the movie and speaker on November 6 ISSUED: 15 October 2009 Shepherdstown, WV--Shepherd University's Common Reading Program, featuring Animal, Vegetable, Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver, and the American Conservation Film Festival will present the movie "Fresh," and noted speaker, author, and full-time farmer Joel Salatin to the Frank Center on Friday, November 6 at 7 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. Salatin is a third generation alternative farmer, who holds a bachelor's degree in English and writes for magazines such as Stockman Grass Farmer, Acres USA, and American Agriculturalist. The Salatin family farm, Polyface Inc. (The Farm of Many Faces) has been featured in the Smithsonian Magazine, National Geographic, and Gourmet Magazine, and profiled on the "Lives of the 21st Century" with Peter Jennings on ABC World News. Polyface Inc. achieved status as the grass farm featured in the New York Times best seller Omnivore's Dilemma by Michael Pollan. Salatin says, "We are in the redemption business: healing the land, healing the food, healing the economy, and healing the culture." The motivating force behind the American Conservation Film Festival is the power of imagery to inform and inspire. As environmental issues become increasingly global, understanding individual roles in the biosphere and the global human community is more important than ever.
