Shepherd holds second Food Fight Series event in the Common Reading Program on November 12 ISSUED: 23 October 2009 Shepherdstown, WV--The second event in the Food Fight Series of Shepherd University's Common Reading Program, Animal, Vegetable, Miracle, will be held on Thursday, November 12 from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Robert C. Byrd Center for Legislative Studies. The program, "Pastures of Plenty, Harvest of Shame," will consist of a short documentary film Viva La Causa, which highlights the origins of Hispanic migrant worker advocacy, a talk by an expert on migrant worker issues, and time for discussion. The film will focus on the role of the migrant and seasonal agricultural worker and provide historical background on organizing Hispanic laborers and protecting their rights. Naomi Tsu, a staff attorney from the Southern Poverty Law Center/IJP, will speak about lessons learned from litigating on behalf of migrant and seasonal agricultural workers. She brings impact cases on behalf of migrant workers seeking economic justice. The IJP advocates systemic change through litigation and community outreach. There will be an audience discussion period at the end of the program. This Shepherd University Common Reading event is co-sponsored with Ezekiel's Place, Shepherdstown Presbyterian Church, St. Joseph's Hispanic Outreach, and the Robert C. Byrd Center for Legislative Studies. A reception in the Robert C. Byrd Center for Legislative Studies foyer will follow. This event is free and open to the public.
