Shepherdstown, WV--Shepherd University's Dr. Timothy K. Nixon, Department of English and Modern Languages, will be leading a trip to the deep South as part of English 447, American Literature Travel Practicum, from March 13 through March 18, 2010.

During the six-day trip, travelers will visit New Orleans, Louisiana, and Oxford and Jackson, Mississippi. While in New Orleans, travelers will stay in a hotel in the French Quarter, make a stop at the Voodoo Museum, ride a streetcar, and visit the Garden District and Audubon Park. A visit to some of the parts of the city that were most adversely affected by Hurricane Katrina is also on the agenda.

Other highlights of the trip include tours of a Southern plantation home and visits to the homes of authors William Faulkner, Eudora Welty, and Margaret Walker. Travelers will also tour some important sites from the Civil Rights era, such as the home and assassination site of Medgar Evers as well as the campus of Jackson State University.

The trip is open to students, faculty, and staff of Shepherd, as well as community members. Students who go on the trip and complete the additional requirements for English 447 can earn three hours of college credit, but enrollment in English 447 is not required.

The cost for the trip, which covers air fare, hotel accommodations, two meals a day, and entrance fees to the sites and attractions, will depend upon the number of travelers, but it should be around $1,650.
