Ann W. Henriksson, coordinator of reference and government documents and study abroad director at Shepherd University, and Dr. David Gordon, associate professor of history at Shepherd, prepared the grant and were notified of its success August 24. The Nippon Foundation was established in 1962 as a nonprofit philanthropic organization, active both in Japan and abroad. The foundation's fundamental aim is the realization of a peaceful and prosperous global society, in which there is no struggle for basic human rights. The Nippon Foundation works to bring together the world's wisdom and use it to transform society. The Nippon Foundation began the book donation project titled "100 Books for Understanding Contemporary Japan" as a means to provide books on contemporary Japan in English to a wide readership overseas. This year, the Foundation intends to donate sets of books to some 200 to 300 institutions throughout North America.
