Dr. Richard Helldobler is new vice president for academic affairs at Shepherd

Shepherdstown, WV--Dr. Richard Helldobler, vice president for academic affairs at Shepherd University, will begin his duties on July 1.

Reporting to the president and serving as a member of Shepherd's executive staff, Helldobler will provide collaborative academic leadership and internal management for faculty, academic staff, and students. He will supervise the deans of Shepherd's four schools, the graduate and continuing education program, the Scarborough Library, the Center for Teaching and Learning, and athletics.

Helldobler comes to Shepherd from California University of Pennsylvania where he has held several positions since 1990, most recently serving as the associate provost/associate vice president for academic affairs. While at California, Helldobler was the dean of the College of Liberal Arts following 10 years as chair of the Department of Theater and Dance. He also was the founding artistic director of the Mon Valley Ballet Theater, the resident dance company of the university.

A graduate of the University of Toledo with a bachelor of business administration degree, Helldobler earned his master's degree in musical theater/staging and directing and his doctorate in theater from Bowling Green State University. Helldobler has been an American Council on Education Fellow, completing his fellowship at Point Park University and Roosevelt University.

Helldobler will be tenured as a professor in Shepherd's Department of Contemporary Art and Theater in the School of Arts and Humanities.

He replaces Dr. Mark Stern who served at vice president for academic affairs for 15 years. Stern joins the Shepherd faculty at the end of June.
