Shepherd's Common Reading Program presents first lecture in a series of panels October 14 ISSUED: 7 October 2009 Shepherdstown, WV--Shepherd University's Common Reading Program will present its first Food Fight lecture in a series of panel discussions throughout the academic year dedicated to exploring issues within this year's common reading, Animal, Vegetable, Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver. The lecture will be held on Wednesday, October 14 at 7 p.m. in the Robert C. Byrd Center for Legislative Studies. A reception for the panelists and audience will follow. Titled "Living La Vita Local," the event will feature four panelists speaking from different perspectives about the fresh and local food movement. Panelists will include Lex Miller, who attempted eating locally grown food for a year; David Ober, a local farmer who raises pigs in the manner described in Kingsolver's book; Liz Gallery, owner of Stone Soup Bistro in Shepherdstown, a restaurant using only fresh and local foods; and Jack Shaw, Shepherd's director of dining services, who will be joined by his food supplier, Amy Bernstein. Dr. Clarissa Matthews, assistant professor of environmental studies at Shepherd, will moderate the panel. The Food Fight series is co-sponsored by the Robert C. Byrd Center for Legislative Studies.
