Shepherdstown, WV--Over 200 Shepherd University first year students have registered and confirmed their participation in Shepherd's Ninth Annual Day of Service on Wednesday, August 12.

"This is the largest group to date," said Holly Frye, Shepherd's director of student community services and service learning. "It is common for students to sign up and not show up, but a number have confirmed, and we are very excited."

During the Day of Service, incoming first year students volunteer at local non-profit agencies in the community and help other first year students move in before classes begin. The Day of Service is an optional event which allows new students to come to campus a few days early, meet other students, and make an immediate connection with the campus and the community.

The students will be volunteering mainly in Jefferson and Berkeley counties, Frye said, she encourages everyone to "look for the blue and gold 'Day of Service' T-shirts in your area."
