Shepherdstown, WV--Shepherd University is celebrating its Common Reading, Animal, Vegetable, Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver, with various local fresh foods on Wednesday, October 7 from 4:30 to 7 p.m. in the dining hall of Shepherd. The cost will be $7.50.

Recipes from the book will be used, as well as local takes on favorite dishes. Over 30 different dishes will be available. Fresh and local cheeses, breads, pastas with eggplant papoutzakia, roasted beets and beet greens with grilled flank steak, and pumpkin soup will also be served. Foods will be provided by Earth 'N Eats, an Amish food co-op from Waynesboro, Pennsylvania. Representatives from Earth 'N Eats will be on hand to discuss the food they provided for the dinner. Bluegrass entertainers, The Speakeasy Boys, will be playing throughout the dinner.

The menu was carefully crafted by Dietitian Catherine Vandermer and chef Scott Anderson. Vandermer will be on hand to discuss the nutritional aspects and impacts of the local food movement.

"Having the explosion of flavors on your palate will convince you that eating fresh and local is the way to go," says Anderson.

A free Shepherd Student Environmental Action Coalition's documentary, "The Future of Food" will also be that evening at 7 p.m. in the Storer Ballroom of the Student Center.
