Shepherd announces West Virginia Fiction Writers Competition ISSUED: 14 March 2008 Shepherdstown, WV--Shepherd University's West Virginia Fiction Writers Competition is now accepting submissions and is open to anyone living or attending school in West Virginia. Any original, unpublished work of fiction between 500 and 2,500 words will be accepted by the Thursday, May 1 deadline. Submissions may not have received any other award, recognition, or special honor. A panel of writers, editors, and creative writing instructors will choose finalists. The winning story will be selected by the 2008 writer-in-residence Adriana Trigiani, author of the Big Stone Gap trilogy, Lucia, Lucia, Queen of the Big Time, Rococo, and other best-selling works of fiction. Trigiani is a native of Appalachia whose work reflects the values and traditions recognized by the Appalachian Heritage Writer's Award, given each year by the West Virginia Humanities Council, the West Virginia Center for the Book, and the Shepherd University Foundation. Trigiani's fiction and award-winning documentaries have focused on Italian-American characters with many of the stories set in rural western Virginia. The stories are imbued with saucy humor, vivid characterization, and a strong sense of place and family. The winners will receive their awards on Wednesday, October 1 at the Appalachian Heritage Writers Awards ceremony and will dine with Trigiani and the Fiction Competition Committee in Shepherdstown. The winning story will also be read at the Appalachian Heritage Festival Concert on Friday, October 3. Fiction competition submissions should be received by the May 1 deadline. Electronic submissions can be sent to bfeltner@shepherd.edu. Hardcopies can be mailed to: West Virginia Fiction Writers Competition, Department of English, Shepherd University, P.O. Box 3210, Shepherdstown, WV 25443. Submissions should be accompanied by the submission form found at www.shepherd.edu/ahwirweb/new_writers.html.
