Shepherd University participating in RecycleMania ISSUED: 5 March 2008 Shepherdstown, WV--Shepherd University is competing in the RecycleMania challenge for the second year. Bottles, cans, glass, paper, and cardboard are the targeted materials for this competition and every day hundreds of pounds of these recyclable materials are thrown in the trash. Shepherd is competing against 400 school in 46 states. Last year student efforts resulted in the diversion of more than 8,000 pounds of materials from landfills in just 10 weeks of collection. At most major universities, more than 80 percent of what is thrown in the trash is recyclable material. RecycleMania was created to address this issue in 2001. Ed Newman of Ohio University teamed up with Stacy Edmonds of Miami University to turn their recycling rivalry into a full-blown national competition for colleges and universities. The competition runs through April 5. Recycling bins are located around campus and the materials will actually be recycled by Shepherd students.
