Shepherd University students receive NIH internships ISSUED: 20 March 2008 Shepherdstown, WV--Five Shepherd University students have been accepted into the West Virginia-Networks of Biomedical Research Excellence (WV-INBRE) summer research program for undergraduate and graduate students from the predominately undergraduate institutions in the network. The program is sponsored by the National Institutes of Health. Students participating include Katie Sterner, Martinsburg; Hilary Miller, Lewisburg; Jessica Johnson, Belington; Curtis Dean, Buckhannon; and Ayo Akinyemi, Pikesville, Maryland. The students are biology, biochemistry, and chemistry majors. Students may participate in the program at either Marshall University or the West Virginia University Health Sciences Center where they will conduct a biomedical research project under the mentorship of a faculty member at the institution they chose. Each institution will receive financial support to offset the cost of supplies associated with the students' project and each student will receive a $4,000 stipend. There are 35 mentors from the WVU School of Medicine and 15 mentors from Marshall University School of Medicine. Available biomedical research projects ranged from those associated with cancer, cardiovascular processes, cell and molecular biology/genetics, chemistry/physics, drug action and metabolism, immunology, infections diseases, lung and muscle studies, neurosciences, reproductive sciences, and toxicology. The program has 20 available internships and runs from June 2-August 1 with the Summer Research Symposium to be held on July 31 at the West Virginia University Health Sciences Center. -30-HORST |
