Shepherdstown, WV--The seventh annual Scarborough Society Gala, held on Friday, August 15 at the Bavarian Inn in Shepherdstown, raised $18,000 to support the activities of the Shepherd University Scarborough Library. The black-tie event was attended by 250 guests. The theme for this year's event was based on the best-seller The Last Convertible by Anton Myrer.

The sponsors for the event were BB&T Wealth Management, represented by Rod and Lynn Frye, and Jefferson Security Bank, represented by Steve and Kathy Morris. Valley Proteins, Inc., represented by Mike Smith, company owner, and his wife, Debra Smith, sponsored the band, Souled Out.

Rod Frye, senior vice president for BB&T's Eastern Panhandle Wealth Management Group, stated, "We are proud to have supported the gala for the past seven years. The mission of Shepherd University, as supported by its great library, is rapidly expanding to meet the academic needs of the Eastern Panhandle's dynamic environment."

BB&T Corporation, with its headquarters in Winston-Salem, N.C., is the national's 12th largest financial holding company with more than $121 billion in assets. Its bank subsidiaries operate more than 1,470 branch offices in ten states and the District of Columbia and nine branches in the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia.

"We are happy to support Shepherd University in this very successful event that brings together Scarborough Library supporters," said Steve Morris, president and CEO of Jefferson Security Bank in Shepherdstown. "We look forward to the society's continued success."

Jefferson Security Bank is a West Virginia state-chartered bank that was formed and opened for business May 19, 1869, making it the oldest bank in Jefferson County. The bank provides full service banking within its primary market area of Jefferson and Berkeley counties in West Virginia and Sharpsburg, Maryland.

Scarborough Society President Ray Alvarez applauded the event for its success in raising funds as well as its significance in increasing community awareness of the society's existence and purpose. Shepherd University President Suzanne Shipley and her husband, Randall Wadsworth, also attended the event.

The 188-member Scarborough Society, sponsored by the Shepherd University Foundation, was chartered in the spring of 2002 as a friends of the library organization to support and strengthen the Shepherd University library system. In addition to increasing the bound collections, funds raised by the society assist in acquiring, maintaining, and updating the technology necessary to operate a 21st-century library and provide a scholarship for a student library intern.

Memberships in the organization are available on an annual basis and members' names are engraved on a Wall of Honor located in the new addition to the Scarborough Library. Members receive special library cards and privileges. Members are also placed on invitation lists for library lectures, book signings, musical events, seminars, and receptions.

Anyone interested in becoming a member of the Scarborough Society is encouraged to call the Shepherd University Foundation Office at 304-876-5397 or 800-344-5231, extension 5397.
