Shepherdstown, WV--The Shepherd University Foundation has announced the establishment of a nursing scholarship in memory of Peggy Collins Porterfield, a nurse at City Hospital in Martinsburg and a 1958 graduate of the City Hospital nursing program. She died in 1979 as a result of an automobile accident. The scholarship has been started by her daughter, Jennifer J. Porterfield.

"In honor of my mother, I want to give back to this community where I grew up and where I now live," said Jennifer Porterfield, a 1993 nursing graduate of Shepherd. "I only wish I had done this years ago. We have a large number of nurses in our family and most have graduated from Shepherd. I hope when they hear about the endowment, they will contribute as well," she said. "It takes a special person to be a nurse. I am hopeful this endowment will guarantee an annual scholarship for many years to come."

The scholarship will be available to residents of Morgan, Berkeley, or Jefferson counties pursuing nursing degrees at Shepherd.

For more information about this endowment or about creating an endowment fund, contact the Shepherd University Foundation at 304/876-5397.
