Shepherdstown, WV--The Shepherd University Foundation announces the creation of an endowment funded by the Berkeley County Crime Solvers, Inc. The scholarship will benefit students studying criminal justice or fire science at the Blue Ridge Community and Technical College. "Our organization wanted to provide an incentive and financial support for employees and volunteers in the county's fire and police departments to further their education," said Capt. David Brining, recently retired from the City of Martinsburg Fire Department and member of the Crime Solvers board of directors. Recipients of the scholarship must have at least one year's service as an employee or volunteer in a Berkeley County fire department of law enforcement agency. The scholarship will be awarded on a year-to-year basis. The Berkeley County Crime Solvers organization was started in the early 1980s as an anonymous means for citizens to assist enforcement agencies. This nonprofit organization relies largely on donations from private citizens and local businesses. Crime solvers conducts McGruff programs in area elementary schools, assists in local parades, and provides monetary awards for information that least to the arrest and conviction of criminals.
