Shepherdstown, WV--The Shepherd University Foundation has announced the establishment of a scholarship to provide financial support to area Job Corps students and to honor Job Corps administrator James Keith Leverett. The scholarship was started by Alan and Barri Tinkler, assistant professors at Shepherd University.

"We wanted to acknowledge Keith for his commitment to providing an education to his students," said Barri Tinkler. "He initiated a service-learning partnership with Shepherd that has resulted in important opportunities for education majors at Shepherd. We also wanted to support the efforts of Job Corps students to think past Job Corps and aspire to a college education."

Leverett, a 1996 graduate of Shepherd, is academic manager of a Job Corps residential facility in Harpers Ferry. He received his master of education in guidance and counseling from Bowie State University, Bowie, Maryland. He is currently working on his doctorate at Bowie State. He has worked with disadvantaged youth for more than 25 years.

Job Corps is a no-cost education and vocational training program started in 1964 and administered by the U.S. Department of Labor that helps disadvantaged youth, ages 16-24, learn trades and receive education to help them get better jobs.
