Shepherdstown, WV--The Shepherd University Foundation has announced the creation of an endowment funded by Ramon and Mary Alvarez of Shepherdstown. Funds will be used to recruit and maintain excellent business administration faculty.

Both Ray and Mary Alvarez are believers in the importance of attracting, retaining, and recognizing excellent teachers. Ray, a 1962 business administration graduate of Shepherd and retired senior executive with Honeywell, attributes much of his success to his education at Shepherd. "I was blessed to be taught by the likes of James Hafer, Harry Klug, Ruth Scarborough, and Charles Printz--all outstanding teachers who inspired students to excellence. I felt I got a quality education at Shepherd which prepared me for a successful career," he said.

Both Ray and Mary Alvarez grew up in Charles Town and returned to the area after his retirement in 2002. They are active supporters of several community and university programs. He currently serves as president of the Shepherd University Foundation and president of the Scarborough Society that supports the university's library. He is also a founding member and current vice president of the Gateway New Economy Council.

"We hope that our donation is just a start," said Ray. "We would love to see other fund endowments in the business areas, as well as donor initiatives in other departments. Such support can take us to a new level of excellence at Shepherd."
