Shepherdstown, WV--Dr. John E. Stealey III, professor of history at Shepherd, received $1,000 from the Shepherd University Foundation in honor of his recognition as Distinguished Professor of History by the University. He is the second recipient of the award, which is presented to faculty members in acknowledgement of outstanding teaching and scholarly research and writing.

A member of Shepherd's faculty since 1969, Stealey is a well-known scholar in many areas of American economic history. He was the editor of the Magazine of the Jefferson County Historical Society for 24 years and served as the Society's president from 1980-2000. He also served as the committee chair for the WVU libraries and is a member of the Agricultural History Society, American Historical Association, Organization of American Historians, South Historical Association, and the Virginia Historical Society.

"Dr. Stealey is a remarkable combination of a thirst for learning and a passion for sharing his knowledge with his students and his community," said Jim Davis, Shepherd University Foundation president. "He is a West Virginian of whom we can be truly proud."

On receiving the Foundation's gift, Stealey said, "I convey my gratitude to the Foundation, its supporters, and the Shepherd University community for this significant recognition of my academic efforts over the years. Institutional affirmation of the solitary activities of research and publication is always appreciated, whereas teaching students furnishes daily its own intangible rewards."
