Shepherdstown, WV--The Shepherd University Foundation has created an endowment funded by the proceeds of a charitable annuity established by M. Louise Shimp during her lifetime. Funds will be used to recruit and maintain excellent art faculty.

Shimp graduated from Martinsburg High School in 1932 and Shepherd University in 1955. She received her master of arts in education and advanced professional certificate in education from George Washington University. Fondly remembered by many as "the art lady," she began her 31-year career with Berkeley County Schools in 1948, traveling from school to school at a time when there were 12 one-room and six two-room schools in the system. She later moved to the central office as art supervisor and then as general supervisor and coordinator with the Department of Instruction.

Shimp introduced media into a form of art instruction by hosting an art show on WEPM that was broadcast into schools and homes. Through her vision and countless endeavors, she made the arts an important part of every child's education. She was one of the first educators to apply for and get federal money for economically and educationally deprived children. She served as president of the West Virginia Art Association and West Virginia Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development.

After retiring in 1979, she created a historic record of the area through her painting of landscapes, still life, and farm scenes. "It is so appropriate that this fund support art excellence," said Evelyn S. Oates, Shimp's sister. "Her life was spent in the support of creativity and talent."
