Shepherd to host Chinese New Year Dinner Jan. 24 ISSUED: 12 January 2006 Shepherdstown, WV--Shepherd University will host a Chinese New Year dinner on Tuesday, January 24 at 5:30 p.m. in the Dining Hall. A traditional Chinese menu will be served, including wonton soup, pork lo mein, and steamed oriental vegetables. Dancers from the Tai Yim Kung Fu School based in Kensington, Maryland, will perform a traditional lion dance to celebrate the new year. The demonstration includes an elaborately decorated paper-mache lion, 12 feet in length, operated by the lion dancers. According to Chinese legend, the practice of lion dancing began when the fierce and beast-like guard of the south gate of heaven, Lin Shu, attacked a village on New Year's Day. Drums, gongs, and cymbals represent the pots and pans the villagers used to thwart the intruding lion. Admission for the general public is $4.75 per person. This event is sponsored by the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs and Dining Services. For more information, contact Carolyn Malachi at 304/876-5453. -30-HORST |
