TIMELINE OF THE SHIPLEY PRESIDENCY

February 2012--The Council on Social Work Education reaffirms Shepherd University's baccalaureate programs in social work and expresses no concerns through reaffirmation of the program the maximum period of eight years.

October 2011--U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) awards the Shepherd University Department of Nursing Education a $1 million grant over three years for improving health care quality and increasing nursing workforce diversity in the Shenandoah Valley.

9/30/2011--Dr. Shipley named the 2011 South Atlantic Division Relay for Life College President of the Year by the American Cancer Society, an annual award given to a university president who visibly demonstrates support for Relay for Life and is involved with the school's Relay for Life efforts.

June 2011--The Create the Future campaign concludes, raising $25 million of the $20 million goal and ending one year earlier than anticipated.

5/12/ 2011--PBS Newshour anchor Jim Lehrer, who presented the commencement address at the 138th Commencement, was awarded a doctor of letters honorary degree, while Bob and Tia McMillan were recognized with the President's Award for their service to Shepherd and the community.

May 2011--The National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) reaccredits Shepherd University's education program and cites no areas for improvement for any of the standards.

4/14/2011--Groundbreaking for the Center for Contemporary Arts Phase II, a three-story, 26,000 square foot facility housing a theater, classrooms, art gallery scene and prop shops, sculpture studio, and outdoor work area, is held.

3/14/2011--Shepherd University leads the way in the state of West Virginia in reducing the number of credits required for a bachelor's degree through curriculum reform in general studies and in the majors and minors, reducing the number of credit hours required from 128 to 120.

10/15/2010--More than 500 faculty, staff and students participated in the reconstituted Founders Day, a celebration of Shepherd University. The event was included as a goal of the Crossroads Strategic Plan.

9/9/2010--A new Shepherd fight song, composed by Dr. Mark McCoy `87, debuts to members of the Shepherd University Board of Governors.

9/1/2010--Shepherd University awarded a $1.1-million, five-year renewable grant from the U.S. Department of Education's Student Support Services TRIO program.

6/30/2010--Agnes Hull Tabler `48, associate registrar and Shepherd alumna, retired after 50 years of service to the University, a record among Shepherd employees.

June 2010--Shepherd's Junior High Gateway academy marks 20 years of gathering incoming eighth-graders on campus to get a feel for college life.

5/15/2010--West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals Justice Margaret L. Workman was the speaker at the 137th Commencement and awarded a doctor of letters honorary degree. Dr. Shipley awarded Lily Hill and her husband, the late Phil Hill, the President's Award for their service to the University and community.

10/22/2009--The Create the Future fundraising campaign was launched publicly at Homecoming 2009 when volunteers, students and staff joined campaign vice chairs Jenny Ewing Allen and Ramon Alvarez `62 on the football field for the halftime announcement that $16 million of the $20 million goal had been raised.

10/5/2009--The Learning Commons in the Scarborough Library named in honor of the late Dr. Howard N. Carper, Jr., vice president emeritus for academic affairs.

5/11/2009--$21.6 million Wellness Center officially opens.

June 2009--Shepherd University becomes the 26th members of the Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges (COPLAC), a significant and important step in establishing the University as a premier public liberal arts institution.

5/16/2009--Playwright Richard Dresser, a Contemporary American Theater Festival perennial, was the keynote speaker at the 136th Commencement and was awarded a doctor of letters honorary degree. The Asam family of Shepherdstown - Erwin, Carol, Christian and David - owners of the Bavarian Inn, received the President's Award.

4/16/2009--Board of Governors approves the Strategic Plan, "Shepherd University at a Crossroads: Pathways to Becoming a Premier Liberal Arts University."

February 2009--Crossroads Conversations are held with faculty, staff, and selected students to discuss the proposed Strategic Plan.

August 2008--U.S. News and World Report names Shepherd University the top-ranked West Virginia public baccalaureate institution and the Princeton Review named Shepherd one of the best colleges and universities in the southeast, joining 139 institutions in the "Best in the Southeast" section titled 2009 Best Colleges: Region by Region.

5/17/2008--Dr. Shipley presided over her first commencement as president of Shepherd University with Rick Lemon as commencement speaker and honorary degree recipient, and Dr. David Dunlop, President Emeritus, the recipient of the President's Award.

4/17/2008--Dr. Shipley makes remarks at the dedication ceremony of the Center for Contemporary Arts (Phase I).

4/6/2008--Dr. Suzanne Shipley is inducted into the Shepherd chapter of Phi Kappa Phi.

1/14/2008--Shelli Dronsfield is named as assistant to the president.

12/13/2007--President Shipley makes remarks at the groundbreaking for the new Wellness Center.

12/4/2007--Stakeholder's Survey Breakfast.

11/27/2007--Stakeholder's Survey Student Meeting.

10/27/2007--Inaugural Events: "An die Musik" (To Music), An Evening of Germanic Poetry, Song, and Chamber Music.

10/27/2007--Inaugural Events: Apple Butter Sale to Benefit the Shepherdstown Fire Department.

10/26/2007--Inauguration of Dr. Suzanne Shipley as 15th President of Shepherd University, 3:00 p.m., Frank Center Theater.

10/25/2007--Inaugural Events: 9 Parts of Desire, A Production of the Theater Department.

10/25/2007--Inaugural Events: "Creating the Future," A Lecture by Dr. Stanley O. Ikenberry '56.

10/25/2007--Inaugural Events: Shepherd University Faculty Art Show Opening.

9/16/2007--President Shipley and student leaders meet with Senator Jay Rockefeller to hear about the College Cost Reduction and Access Act of 2007.

9/10/2007--President Shipley addresses the Shepherd University Assembly; introduces new University seal; announces a Shepherd stakeholders survey and asks for participation.

6/29/2007--Dr. Shipley officially assumes the presidency of Shepherd University.

6/12/2007--Dr. Shipley makes remarks at the dedication ceremony of Erma Ora Byrd Hall.

2/19/2007--Dr. Shipley is announced as the 15th president of Shepherd University.
