SHEPHERD TO HOLD RELAY FOR LIFE Shepherd University will hold Relay For Life at 4 p.m. Friday, April 11 through 6 a.m. Saturday, April 12 on the Midway. All proceeds benefit the American Cancer Society. Last year Shepherd raised more than $63,000 and was ranked sixth in the nation for schools of Shepherd's size. Teams are typically made up of 8-15 people from the local community and make a commitment to having one member on the track at all times. Each team member is challenged to raise a minimum of $100 in donations prior to the event, and must pay a $10 registration fee. The registration fee includes a t-shirt and dinner provided by Charles Town Races and Slots. "Shepherd University hosts Relay For Life because cancer literally affects everyone. Our students can see real results through our efforts," said Holly Morgan Frye, director of student community services. The event will begin at 4 p.m. with a survivor torch run through Shepherdstown, beginning on German Street and ending on the Midway. A survivor lap and reception dinner will be held at 6 p.m. and survivors are served desserts made by the teams. Each team will receive a tent space on the Midway and live bands, a D.J., food, games, a climbing wall, and on-site fundraisers such as bake sales will be ongoing. The American Cancer Society's Relay For Life is an overnight celebration of life dedicated to present and former cancer patients, their families, and friends. During Relay, team members take turns walking, camping out, and enjoying entertainment, food, and games in a party atmosphere. Luminaries will be available for a $5 donation in honor/memory of someone who has dealt with cancer. Corporate sponsorships are available and anyone in the business, school, church, and local community can be a part of this event.
