Opportunities available for alternative holiday giving
The Office of Student Community Services and Service Learning has a variety of options available for holiday giving this year, whether you are a student, faculty member, or department looking for an alternative to gift giving this year.
Shepherd is teaming up with the Salvation Army, continuing the tradition of 10 plus years, to spread a little holiday cheer to those in the local area that may be in need during the holidays.
Students, faculty and staff, community members, or departments can choose from any one of the following: fill a stocking for children ages 0-12; angel tag for children 0-16; and adopt a family, by selecting an entire family or individual family member.
Holly Frye, director of community service and service learning, says that often groups, athletic teams, or departments go in and buy a larger gift for a family or do the entire family together in place of exchanging gifts.
Carol Boyd, program assistant in the Career Development Center, said that last year, her office decided to buy gifts for another family instead of exchanging gifts amongst themselves.
"We enjoyed doing it last year and decided to do it again," Boyd said.
Stockings, tags, and information on families or individual family members can be picked up in the Information Center in the Ram's Den. Gift wrapping is optional, however, Michelle Lawson, coordinator for holiday gifts and administrative assistant of community services and service learning, asks that gifts purchased for the families or individuals be left unwrapped to better organize the gifts that come in. Once gifts are purchased, they may be dropped off at the Information Center or in suite 216 in the Student Center.
The deadline for stockings and angel tag gifts is Friday, December 4. Adopt a family gifts are due Monday, December 7.
