Transfer Evaluation System (TES):  New Technology Supporting Transfer Articulation

Shepherd University has long had a subscription to College Source, an online repository of annual catalogs from nearly every institution of higher education in America (and some overseas), made available in PDF for easy browsing of course descriptions and curricula.  This resource has been a great help over the years in providing accurate information to academic departments who needed to review an incoming transfer student's courses for possible transfer articulation--determining if a course can be considered equivalent to a Shepherd course and applied within a specific academic program.

About two years ago, this same company began to transition its collection of PDF catalogs to an online database of courses and descriptions, and the Transfer Evaluation System (TES) was launched.  We quickly saw the value in the new system and jumped on board.  Some amazing statistics about the TES database:

Imagine, all of this information at our fingertips!  Now, instead of searching through hundreds of pages in a PDF, we can link immediately to the course description (or sets of course descriptions) in the database, and can print or e-mail the information directly to an academic department chair for his or her review.  Those academic decisions are then applied to the individual student and are "remembered" in the Banner database for the next time a transfer student brings along that same course!

Currently, we are in the process of transitioning our own transfer articulation agreements to the TES database as well:  all of the most updated versions have moved, from our former labor-intensive Word documents, to public views of the equivalencies held in the TES database.  One of the latest-and-greatest features TES brings us is the ability to "roll" a set of equivalencies from one catalog to another with just the click of a button--and then we work with departments to review only those courses that have been changed or added in the new catalog!

For us, this online resource means that the work of weeks now takes only days...for you, it means easier access to more information about your transfer students...for our transfer students, it means a greatly-streamlined review process, and much earlier transcript information for the important academic decisions they'll be making with their advisors.

If you have questions about transfer articulation or the TES resource, feel free to contact our office.
