Retention Initiatives Updates

The University is engaging in a variety of new retention initiatives for AY 2008-2009. Following is an update on Retention Office initiatives.

  • Mention It for Retention
To date, we have received more than 100 Mention It for Retention cards, e-mails, and Web alerts. We are following up on them as quickly as possible and many of you have received e-mails and/or phone calls in reference to these students. We have also contacted many of these students who have received grades of F, IF, and/or D at midterms to offer resources and assistance. Thank you so much for all your help in getting this program off to a great start.

  • FASTPASS (Families And Shepherd Together Promoting Academic Success for Students)
The third issue of FASTPASS is now available online at http://www.shepherd.edu/university/FASTPASS/. Check out how we are working to communicate with parents...

  • General Studies Advising Program (Pilot)
A cohort of 80 students from the incoming freshmen is now part of this new program and has been meeting with their advisors beginning in early October. We are excited to see how these students fare with this added level of intervention.

  • Student Readiness Inventory
The Student Readiness Inventory was administered to all entering, FTIC over the summer Advising and Registration sessions freshmen. Based on students' scores, we identified 268 students as being potentially at-risk for attrition or poor academic performance. Of those students, 154 received at least one D, F, or IF at midterm. The Center for Teaching and Learning is working to contact those students with information about campus resources available to help them succeed. The students' advisors are also being notified that their advisees have fallen into this "at-risk" group.
