First-Time Direct Loan Borrowers Students who are borrowing for the first time have two more steps after they accept their loan: signing a Master Promissory Note and completing Entrance Counseling. Failure to complete either of these steps will delay the receipt of funds. To sign an electronic Master Promissory Note (eMPN), the student needs to go to the federal Web site, https://dlenote.ed.gov. They will need their federal Personal Identification Number (PIN) in order to sign. We do request that a paper Master Promissory Note be sent to each student's permanent address should they feel more comfortable with the paper process; however, the Web site is much faster. Entrance Counseling can be completed at www.dlssonline.com. This is a brief tutorial which outlines the student's rights and responsibilities as a borrower, in essence, confirming that they are about to take out a loan (borrowing against their future earnings) which must be repaid. The Office of Financial Aid is notified electronically when both of these requirements are met. Upon receipt, we can then release funds to the Cashier's Office. |
