As each year begins, I am asked what makes Shepherd University so unique? Why would students choose to attend with so many choices available to them today? My answer without hesitation is character!

So what brings us together? It's more than small-town comfort and the fact that everyone knows your name. There's a place for everyone--athletes and artists, joiners and those who like privacy--and all go out of their way to help each other.

You can see the heart of the community in our traditions. Rocking crowds at Shepfest. Enthusiastic fans at Homecoming. The huge turnout at Midnight Breakfast served by professors, staff, and administrators before finals.

A big heart is what it's all about. In the Relay for Life for cancer research, Shepherd is one of the top six fundraisers in the "nation" of institutions our size. More than 160 students this year came to campus two days early to complete community service projects together with faculty, staff, and administrators. Shepherd is a safe place to become who you want to be--because everyone respects who you are.

These are just a few of the things that make up Shepherd's character. And this character is being recognized. This year alone, Shepherd University has been named as the top-ranked West Virginia public baccalaureate institution according to U.S. News and World Report's America's Best College South rankings. We have also been named for the fourth year, a Best in the Southeast College by Princeton Review.

Abraham Lincoln said, "Character is like a tree and reputation its shadow. The shadow is what we think it is; the tree is the real thing."

Shepherd University IS the real thing!
