Updates from the Registrar The revised form for Complete Withdrawal, requiring the signature of the advisor, has received final approval from the Faculty Senate, and is now in use. The double-sided form can be viewed through the Registrar's Faculty-Advisor page at http://www.shepherd.edu/register/faculty.html. We encourage you to look it over, especially the 2nd page, which outlines many of the (sometimes unexpected) consequences of a complete withdrawal from a semester. By the way, this web page contains additional information that might be useful to you, including training pieces on using RAIL, accessing Degree Evaluation, and web grading. Contact us if you have questions, or if you would like individual or departmental training in using the RAIL system as you work with students. Beginning Spring 2007, the Blue Ridge Community and Technical College will be providing its own registrar services. What this will mean for our students is that the normal green Transfer Approval Form will be required for a Shepherd University student to take a course from BRCTC and transfer it back. The blue Consortium Registration Form, used during the semesters when the offices of Shepherd University's Enrollment Management unit served both institutions, is no longer in use. As part of an effort to increase student success and retention, we have identified about 55 students whose Fall 2006 mid-term grades showed only grades of F (inadequate academic performance) and IF (no longer attending/never attended/never formally withdrew). Those students and their advisors received "academic alerts" soon after mid-terms were reported, referring them to academic and personal support systems at Shepherd, and reminding them of important deadlines for withdrawal. As you approach final grading, please keep in mind the important distinction between these two failing marks, as each describes a very different situation or pattern of behavior that the advisor may be able to address with the student. |
